I had hoped to stop in Montepulciano for the hill town, but since I had left the maps of Italy in our last car, we are only going by the GPS. After 2 side trips off the main highway that take us nowhere, we settle on Orvieto. Listen to me "settle on Orvieto"
Perched high on a hill overlooking the entire region it is a greatest tourist destination. A splendid Gothic church and typical narrow streets that are in a large part pedestrian.
We have a nice lunch outside and head to the church.
The church features lots of frescoes and painting and is done in the black and white stone that several of Italy's churches are famous for.
Back on the road again with 4 hours to go. It is getting late so we pass up the gardens and drive and drive and drive. South of Rome is not as pretty as Tuscany but as you get closer to Naples the mountains get bigger. We are staying in a small town perched high above Amalfi. A day in Amalfi, then to Pompei and back to Rome. We did not want to stay in the same place in Pompei we did with Patty, Kathy and Amanda. Plus the kids can see the Amalfi coast. Almost to the turn off to go towards the road to Amalfi, but I turn one exit to soon and we are right in front of the first place we stayed at in Pompei. Renai's family could see why we didn't want to stay there again. And low and behold, the GPS is taking me over the same high mountain we went over with the other group on our way to Amalfi.
We arrive in Agerola around 7:30 and are exactly in front of the apartment. But the temperature is chilly. I wear a sweater to dinner and we dine high above Amalfi as the sun sets and the lights come on along the coast.
