On to Assisi Thursday May 21st

Our trusty steed for the next two weeks .

My traveling companions at our first hill town.
 San Oreste

Today we said goodbye (for a while) to Rome. A trip to the local market and then the dreaded schlepping of the bags. From the apartment, to the Metro, to the train station, to the airport, to the car rental place. All the time we were in Rome not once were our train tickets checked. But this trip someone finally came around and checked. Thank goodness we had ours and had validated them. Large fines for not validating them  200 euros.
Linda (our traveling companion for the next two weeks), met us at the Budget rental counter and a few minutes later we were off, sort of.  We had lost the holder for the GPS so being clever, we bought a bag of beans to rest it on. Well that didn't work. After trying many different places I found if I wedged it in front of the speedometer it would stay.  I was a bit nervous about driving in Italy, but it came right back to me once I got going.

Lunch time came, so we turned off at an arbitrary exit and looked for a town and a restaurant. Found the town alright (pictured above) but no open restaurants. Quaint little town that was fun to walk around in. Some Gelato and prosciutto later we were back on he road
Around 5 o'clock we found the farm house we were staying at and then drove Linda to her hotel in downtown Assisi.  Being a hilltown, places in Assisi are hard to find even with iPhone maps. After her hotel manager found us, we got her checked in and went to eat before Linda fell asleep from jet lag.  Nothing open till 7 PM. A light snack and then off to the grocery store to stock up on essentials once again. Did I mention we left all our cheeses in the first apartment?

Back to Assisi and try as we may we could not find the restaurant that had been recommended to us. Tired of walking up and down the streets of Assisi, we went in a nearby trattoria and had a delightful light meal of cheeses and pastas. Get back in the car, head to the farmhouse and to bed.  Rain in the forcast for tomorrow so we are not sure which adventure we will go on.
